Six methods to improve the service life of stamping dies

Stamping die is a necessary process equipment in the process of stamping production, which plays a decisive role in improving product quality, prolonging product life and improving production efficiency. However, it is difficult to meet the production requirements due to the frequent wear and loss of working dimensions of stamping dies in the production process. Therefore, it is critical to improve the durability (service life) of the stamping die.

The methods to improve the durability of stamping dies generally include the following:

1. Improving the Design of Stamping Die

Whether the design of stamping die is reasonable is the basis of improving the durability of stamping die. Therefore, effective measures should be taken to improve the durability of the stamping die when designing the stamping die. For example, the life of the small hole stamping die is often shown on the punch for punching the small hole. For this kind of stamping die, the length of the small punch shall be shortened as much as possible during the design to increase the strength. At the same time, the guide sleeve shall be used to strengthen the protection of the small punch. In addition, in the design of stamping die, factors such as the form of die base, the fixing method and guiding form of male and female dies, the determination of pressure center, and the rigidity of upper and lower formworks should be fully considered. Especially for the blanking die, the selection of clearance value has a great impact on the durability. During design, the clearance of the stamping die shall be selected reasonably, and the clearance value shall not be too small, otherwise, the service life and durability of the stamping die will be affected. Practice has proved that, without affecting the quality of stamping parts, appropriately enlarging the clearance can greatly improve the durability of stamping dies, sometimes even several times or dozens of times.

2. Correct selection of stamping die materials

Different stamping die materials have different strength, toughness and wear resistance. Under certain conditions, the use of advanced materials can improve the durability several times. Therefore, in order to improve the durability of stamping dies, good materials must be selected.

Toolox series material is a new kind of pre hardened tool steel with high toughness, high wear resistance and basically no internal stress It also has very high purity, very fine grain size, very little S and P content, and little carbide precipitation, which is very uniform Due to the special composition design, Toolox series materials have very excellent surface treatment performance. The surface hardness of Toolox44 after nitriding can reach above HRC65, the surface hardness of Toolox40 can reach above HRC62, and the surface hardness of Toolox33 can reach above HRC58, with a depth of up to 1.8mm.

The above characteristics of Toolox series materials make them have special advantages in some stamping dies.

1) Stamping mould for thicker steel plate (typical punching and shearing thickness is 35mm steel plate), stainless steel plate and non-ferrous metal plate, and air conditioning fin mould.

2) Drawing die, stainless steel drawing die.

3) Cold extrusion die. Cold extrusion 304 stainless steel, with a thickness of more than 0.5mm, replaces DC53 and other materials, with very good effect.

4) Large stamping formwork with high dimensional stability requirements.

3. Forging and heat treatment of stamping die parts reasonably

It is one of the main ways to improve the durability of stamping dies that reasonable forging and heat treatment are required for materials of the same material and different properties while selecting high-quality stamping die materials. For example, during quenching, if the production is overheated during heating, it will not only make the workpiece too brittle, but also easily cause deformation and cracking during cooling, reducing the durability. Therefore, the heat treatment process must be reasonably mastered when manufacturing stamping dies.

Toolox material is a kind of quenched and tempered steel that is directly pre hardened by steel mills. It no longer requires heat treatment. With proper surface treatment (such as nitriding), the high toughness of Toolox base material, combined with the high hardness of the upper surface layer, can achieve excellent results.

4. Reasonably arrange the stamping die manufacturing process and ensure the processing accuracy

The processing precision of stamping die has a great influence on the durability of stamping die. For example, due to the uneven assembly clearance in the blanking die, the female die is often gnawed under the action of shear force, which affects the life of the stamping die. At the same time, the low surface finish of the stamping die will also reduce the durability of the stamping die. Therefore, during processing, it is necessary to pay full attention to the size of hole spacing, the perpendicularity of the punch to the support surface of the fixed plate during assembly, the uniformity of the spacing between the stamping dies, and the guidance accuracy grade of the guide sleeve and the guide pillar. The higher the manufacturing and assembly accuracy and the higher the surface roughness level of the working part, the higher the durability of the stamping die.

5. Correct selection of press

In order to improve the durability of the stamping die, the press with high accuracy and rigidity should be selected, and its punching tonnage should be more than 30% of the punching pressure. Normally, the service life of the die can be increased by dozens of times by using the servo punch.

6. Reasonable use and maintenance of stamping dies

In order to improve the durability of the stamping die, the operator must reasonably use and maintain the stamping die, and the stamping die should be regularly repaired to prevent the stamping die from working with defects.
